Beside the road there is a railway crossing the pass. The highest point of the roads is 920m above sealevel.

During the late 1990's the 440m high Otira Viaduct was build, replacing a winding part of the road which ran under a major rockfall hazard. The viaduct is located 10km west of Arthur's Pass Village.
