Penguin watching

2 penguin nesting sites are close by the city centre. It is told that the penguins sometimes get confused about the way and walk straight into the city centre. The Blue Penguins are the smallest penguins in the world and waddle ashore each night at the harbour where a viewing terrace was build to watch the event around sunset.

Moeraki Boulders

Giant round stones formed millions of years ago.
They consist mainly of carbonate of lime, silica, aluminia and peroxide of iron. The round shape depends on the process of origin. A central core of lime crystals consolidate the ingredients from the adjacent soil.
According to a Maori legend, the boulders are food baskets washed ashore after the canoe Arai-ti-uru wrecked on a journey south.
