The University of Otago was opened in 1869 and is New Zealand's oldest and largest university. The 20.000 students helping to create the fine atmosphere of the city.

Octagon

The city's main place is the Octagon. Here you'll find the visitor's centre, cafe's and St. Pauls Cathedral. The statue of Robert Burns overlooks the place.

St Paul's Cathedral

Railway Station

The Railway Station built of basalt and Oamaru stone has a huge tower. The interior is well worth a visit as it reflects the prosperity of the gold rush. The foyer is decorated with Majolica tiles, has a mosaic floor and stained glass windows. It is more a kind of a temple for travellers than a functional building.

It is the departure point for the Taieri Gorge Railway.
