Blenheim to Kaikoura
The first part of your drive leads along endless wineyards. After the SH1 passed the mountains you'll reach the endless coastline leading to Kaikoura.
Lake Grassmere eSolar salt works
The company pumps seawater into shallow ponds and use the strong winds and hot summer days to evaporate the water. The salt can be collected by huge machines and will be sold at supermarket around New Zealand.
Visitors are welcome.
The DoC campground is located directly at the long and beautiful beach.
Ohau Point - seal colony
Nowadays hunting of seals is prohibited and the number of this animals is steadily rising. You can watch them directly beside the carpark along SH1.
Kaikoura
Whaling began in the early 1800's, nowadays it's famoust for whale-, dolphin- and seal watching tours.
Lookout
A great lookout with views of the sea and the mountains which are snow-capped for many month of the year. Look for the Scarborough St in the middle of the peninsula and head for the freshwatertank to reach the lookout.
Fur Seals
Fur Seals can be observed at the eastern end of the road across the peninsula.
Whale and Dolphin watching
Two different currents meet right infront of Kaikoura's coastline providing plenty of food for the rich marine life. A fleet of boats equipped with all the modern gadgets to search for whales is on service. It's wise to book your seats in advance during the peak season.
