Tongariro National Park
There are three Volcanoes at Tongario World Heritage National Park. Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe. Mt Ngauruhoe was digitally transformed to Mt Doom in the "Lord of the Rings" triology.
The Doc Visitor centre just above the Chateau is the place to visit before you have a closer look at the National Park. Beside a fine exhibition about the park you can get here the neest informations about weather and track conditions.

Mt RuapehuMt Ruapehu (2797 m) is the highest Mountain on the Northern Island. The volcanoe erupted in 1995 and 1996. The crater lake below the summit is hot, sulphurous and the surrounding walls are often covered with ice.
There are three ski fields at Mt Ruapehu.

The strenuous 17km hike will take aprox. 8 hours to complete.
You'll see a lunar like landscape, steaming vents, hot springs, old lava flows and volcanic craters as well as the Blue and Emerald Lake.
