Hokianga Harbour - Kaitaia

It's a wonderful moment when you arrive at Hokianga Harbour - the white sand and blue water gives a great contrast to all the green you saw during the last hours drive. On the way to the north you can save a lot of time by crossing Hokianga Harbour by a pleasant 15 minutes ferrytrip from Rawene.


Hokianga Harbour

As soon as you are on top of Omapere Hill you'll see the blue waters and white sand hills of Hokianga Harbour.

Signal Station Lookout Point

15min return - easy
Watch out for the sign while descending the hill to Hokianga Harbour. The walk leads to the southern point of the Hokianga Heads overlooking the sea, the harbour and the sand dunes of Niua on the northern head of the harbour.


South Hokianga Museum

The i-Site on the waterfront houses a small museum presenting the area's history and an audio-visual show about Opo the Dolphin.

Rawene

If you are on the way to the north you'll safe a lot of time by crossing the harbour by ferry at Rawene. If your destination is the bay of Islands than simply keep to SH12.

The ferry takes just 15min to Kohukohu and departs one times per hour. Take your time to have a look at the historic buildings of Rawene before accessing the ferry.
