Taupo
Travelling in the Taupo area you'll recognize the active volcanic zone. Lake Taupo filled a collapsed volcano after violent eruptions. Imagine what must happened if you have a look at the large lake from the viewpoint just before you enter the city from the North. Ice cores taken in Greenland and Antarctica have dated the eruption at AD 181.

Walks

Tokaanu Thermal walk
20 min return - easy
Start nearby the Tokaanu Thermal Pools to view bubbling mud and silica springs.
1 hour return - easy
Start: SH1 approx. 6km north of Taupo
The thermal activities started when drilling began at the nearby Wairakei Geothermal field in the 1950's.
Huka Falls
At peak seasons there are aproximately 250.000 litres water per second. The falls are nearly 10 meters high.
Cross the bridge at the carpark and walk to several viewpoints.
