Yellow Eyed Penguins
Yellow Eyed Penguins are one of the rarest of the world's 17 species of penguins. They like to nest deep in costal forest, scrub or dense flax. Nests and roosting sites can be found up to 1 kilometre inland.
To collect food they dive up to 130 metres. On the menu are small fish like red cod, silversides and also squid.
A pair will rise two children each year.
The YEP can reach an age of 20 years.
In 2002 an estimated 450 pairs lived on mainland New Zealand.
How to see penguins
- Hide that the penguin can't see you. Penguins won't come ashore to feed their children if they see you.
- Talk quietly.
- Stay to the tracks provided. Desturbing the nests can result in the penguin abandoning it's young.
- It's a good idea to take a pair of binoculars with you!
