Driving in New Zealand
New Zealanders are driving on the left side of the road with the steering wheel at the right side of your car.
Plan enough time for the journey. New Zealand's Highways are mostly sealed but steep and windy two lane roads take more time than a flat four lane American Highway.
Open road speed limit: 100 km/h
Urban areas: 50 km/h
Be extremely careful on unsealed roads if you are not used to them. There might be a grader just around the next corner.
One lane bridges are common around New Zealand where signs indicate priorities
One thing you should know at intersections:
When turning remember to give way to vehicles coming toward you and turning right.
Signs showing the time you are allowed to park your car. As blue ones are valid only Monday to Friday, parking under red ones means you have to be careful everyday.
If you want to hire a car you have to be at least 21 years old.
It's getting more and more common to buy an old car for the duration of your stay. You don't have to be 21 to do that.
